Created shortly after her divorce from Diego Rivera, this striking double self-portrait showcases two different versions of Kahlo sitting side-by-side. On the right sits the Frida loved by Diego, wearing traditional Mexican Tehuana attire with a whole, healthy heart. On the left sits the independent, European-dressed Frida with a broken, exposed heart. Connected by a single artery, the painting is a profound exploration of identity, heartbreak, physical suffering, and inner resilience.
